Party on another island

On a bit of a whim we’ve decided to go to Hong Kong this weekend. This was never in the running, because, well, Im not really sure why, maybe because we’ve been there before. But it was a long time ago. Anyway. Thats not the point. The point is we planned this with only 4 days notice and thats a bit of an issue for me packing wise. Yeah- I’d love to be the kind of person that can throw a few things in a bag and head off on some grand adventure. The last time I tried that was in the 5th grade when I went with my family to Chicago for an overnight. I forgot both socks and underwear. I like to start packing well in advance. I’ve already started a drawer in my nightstand for all my “take back to the states” riff-raff. Right now I have a laundry basket at the end of my bed overflowing with stuff for just the weekend.

This morning Nathan and I worked on packing our ‘cosmetics’. Nathan’s toiletry bag is a small mesh pencil holder from Wal-Mart. Mackenzies? Hers is a vinyl aqua green zippered pouch that says “Boulder Community Hospital” in large white letters. I believe it was a freebie first aid kit in a previous life. None-the-less, it serves its purpose. I got out my three large baskets of miniatures, medicines, small containers, travel items etc. And Nathan and I got busy. He was beyond thrilled to go through and pick out mini sized toothpastes and look at all the little containers I had. We probably spent an hour going through stuff (and Im still not finished- see why it takes me so long) and he kept telling me, “mommy….this is SO. MUCH. FUN.” “Im not going to school today because Im having too much fun.” “This is So Great!” Had I known going through these baskets would make him happy to the point of giddy- we could have done this a long time ago. I hope these kind of moments are the ones that remain burned in my memory 20 years from now.

I updated my Facebook page today (which, I must say has lost its luster a bit and I’m lucky if I sign on twice a week anymore) and some of our really good friends are headed that way too. And some of their friends. So, yeah, it will be a party. Anyone else coming?

  • So will this be the first test of your fancy new backpack? ;) Have a great time! We went to Hong Kong way back when I was first pregnant with Audrey. That seems so long ago…

  • Wow. Someone who finally understands why it can take two days just to pack my toiletries. You have to sort which small size. You don’t want Teeny for a weekend trip (that would only do for overnight), but you don’t want Large travel sizes for a weekend….except for conditioner, etc etc. Sigh. I hate packing….but sort of love it too. I love that Nathan had so much fun. Too cute.

  • Have a good trip! We never made it to Hong Kong so it’s still on our list. Have some dim sum for us!
