A Very Scientific Survey

Im mulling over the (I think) last portion of this series before returning to exciting things like: Nathan telling me “when you say ‘I swear’ do you know what that means? That means you are going to kick someone in the head….with your foot. Thats what it means.”  Yes- for $400 a month you TOO can send your kid to preschool to acquire useful, albeit incorrect, information. I swear. Also Nathan has been testing his limits lately with sassy little smart mouth comments and  PC gets all drill instructor on his ass and listening to that banter cracks me UP. Then he inevitably lands himself in timeout and while in timeout he gets the silent treatment. “DAAAAD DAAAAAAAAD” he will yell. And after 8 or 10, increasingly louder and longer DAAAAD’s you hear this little exasperated “Oh…neverMIND.” And I have to bite my lip because damn its hilarious.

But, before we get back to those types of tales, lets talk about food. There will be another giveaway so don’t totally tune out yet. And before I tell you what I eat, I want to know what you eat.

FYI- I have no way of tracking your answers. Mom, I know probably a quarter of the hits a day are from you, but for the rest of you 70 readers, you have no reason not to participate in my Very Scientific Survey. I have no way of knowing who you are. Though, my curiosity is growing as to who is “trackingfriends”?

*I realize the problem with this one is family size (and number of non-potty trained members in the house). So, lets just assume you are shopping for a family of 4-5 (ie :if you are a couple double your amt)

  • I would say that Marc and I eat fairly healthy. I make dinner 4-5 nights a week and we eat out amostly on the weekends. The dinners I make probably vary in calories, sodium, carbohydrates etc. This week, for example, I am making Ants in a Tree (a spicy Szechuan noodle dish with ground chicken), Tomato and Pancetta Pasta, Red Beans and Rice, and Chicken Vindaloo. Last week it was Italian Wedding Soup, Lemon/Parsley/Garlic Chicken and Perfect Rice (I’m not complementing my rice that’s the name of the recipe I used), Artichoke and Spinach Pizza, and Chicken with a Bechamel Sauce over Rice. I never do calculations on how many carbohydrates are in my meals. I know a lot of folks worry about that, but my mom has eaten an insane amount of rice in her lifetime and I would argue with anyone who says that she is not the picture of health. I also don’t obsess about fat. Now we do eat mostly chicken breast, purchase lean beef, and use very little oil, butter etc. But really, I have no idea how much fat any of the meals I make have in it. All I know is I cook with fresh ingredients and watch the amount of bad fats I put in the meals. I also recognize that some of my meals are naughty, but I’m ok with eating a little bit of fat now and again.

As for where I grocery shop, I shop at Super Target. You just can’t beat the price. I refuse to pay, for example, $10 for a bag of rice at Safeway that costs me $5 at Target and $2.50 at the Asisan Market. I have comparison shopped and I would say that on the whole, with a few exceptions, Super Target is cheaper than the other grocery store chains. I do boycott Walmart and while I know that Super Target probably engages in many of the same practices, I think Walmart is worse both in the way the store affects the way things are produced and in the way they treat their employees. As far as organic, I try buying organic meats and milk. I can’t say that I am consistent in buying organic fruits and vegetables, the cost just gets to me. A good deal of my grocery store costs are already spent on fruits, vegetables, and herbs (which I am going to start growing) and I just can’t bring myself to spending an extra $25 or so a week to get organic. Anyway, that was probably a little bit more than what you were looking for : )

  • Your “why do you buy organic” question should have an “All of the above” choice. ;)
